Recorded today on june 17, 2020, Joaquin Turina’s first series of Danses Gitanes, Op.55. I am incredibly fond of Spanish piano music, and Turina’s music in particular is a “guilty pleasure” while procrastinating on Iberia and Goyescas 😉 This set of “gipsy dances” is probably his most well-known work, specificaly No.5, Sacro-Monte which will be familiar to many intermediate and advanced piano students.
It was written in 1930, and dedicated to the notable Spanish pianist José Cubiles, who premiered the work on January 15, 1932 in the Teatro de la Comedia in Madrid.
I hope to record the second series, Op.84, which I don’t know quite as well yet, later this year.
