This film was made by Step in Time under lockdown conditions in June 2020 as part of Paignton Palace Theatre’s ‘Poems from the Palace’ project to keep local community groups connected with the theatre and creative projects.
Step in Time are a dance group based in Paignton, Torbay who usually meet weekly for dance classes to help with strength and balance after a fall. During lockdown the participants aged 65-95 have been shielding at home for many weeks. Although we have been meeting on zoom every week and its lovely to catch up with each other over a cuppa, we miss making work together…
So we are working together on a series of creative projects over the summer using the 5 ways to wellbeing for inspiration.
This poetry project is part 1 of our wellbeing project which is all to do with learning. As well as learning lines for the poem, the group have set themselves a challenge to learn a new skill, song or dance. We plan to show off our talents and share whatever we have each learned at a Fun Palace event we will have together in August.
We have also been reflecting on what we have learned in lockdown – including what we have learned about ourselves. One of our group, age 95, learned she was missing the sea too much, so she and her husband rolled up their trousers and went for a paddle at Paignton beach.
What have you learned about yourself in lockdown?
Step in Time would like to thank Dance in Devon for keeping us connected through our Five Ways project this summer. We would also like to thank Paignton Palace Theatre for inviting us to : take part in Poems from the Palace; giving us space to video dance sessions for participants to dance at home; giving us space to meet for our Fun Palace event this summer.
We are nothing without our partners x
