Side is my third dance in my film trilogy, which includes, Inside Out & Out-Side. The three films are a response to the Covid-19 pandemic. As the third month of the pandemic unravels we the people of the United States of America find ourselves confronted with our toxic history of racial profiling and the present-day practices of police brutality. George Floyd, another Black Man has been snuffed out by a group of police officers. A global response of peaceful protest and violent protest is being played out as I assembled Side. As I conceived Side, initially my thinking was focused on the political divide that is tearing apart the United States of America. The Red and Blue sides. With the killing of George Floyd and the protests, the focus for my film expanded to include racial and political divides.

Siding has consumed American consciousness and it is destroying democracy. Democracy is defined as: governed by the people. All people. Not governed by the red and blue side. Our present President has amplified and fueled the divide instead of unifying we the people. As long as we attach to a side wholeheartedly – wholebeingly we will never unite. As the saying goes “divided we fall.” We the people are stumbling. To catch ourselves from falling we must unite. Being on a side is broken. The red and blue side no longer functions as we the people. Two sides inherently divide. The position/job of a president, simply put, is to balance all sides. Our present reality is our evidence that this is NOT happening. Our nation is stumbling because our leaders are broken. They are stuck on a side rather than doing their jobs which is to listen to the people.

Another defining principle of democracy is Majority rule. I don’t have this factually speaking but with every fiber of my being, I believe that the majority of human wants the same thing: To be visible, to be heard, to be valued, to love and be loved, to grow, to be free, to participate and experience life fully without any kind of oppression or racism, to be embodied free of gender rules. Ok, the gender thing we are all just learning but we will get there. The majority of us want the same things. Our government should be a reflection of the majority. The red and blue sides are responsible for making this happen and if they can’t they should step aside and let those who do, do it.

To unite, we need to detach ourselves from a side. Siding is stopping us from seeing. Seeing is the act of witnessing life. When we look deeply at and see life we recognize that there are no sides – there is only life. Precious life. Instead of looking outward to social media or the two sides of news (to form your opinion), turn your gaze inward and examine your own heart and mind. The internal calm voice you hear – your soul, if you will, knows the laws of nature. Nature teaches us of the harmony inherently existing within our very alive planet and all of its inhabitants. Choose to live by the laws of nature while peacefully challenging, examining, and altering the laws of man/humankind to make room for our ever-evolving humanity.

My dance film Side ends with me chanting side by side by side by side by side. Standing together side by side all together united is how democracy works. So instead of choosing the red or blue side choose the only way that prevents us all from falling by standing side by side as a United America – the version that we are still in the dreaming of.
