Our CUBAN MUSIC video of the week takes you directly to Havana’s Salon Rojo for a special concert with Yoruba Andabo featuring singer, Ariel Monterecy.
Extended member of the PlazaCUBA family, Ivan Ramos (son of Juan de Dios Ramos, the founder of Raíces Profundas), embodies the music with his Columbia dance – the form of rumba that features a male soloist. Ariel, who learned to sing from Juan de Dios, takes a moment to recognize Juan as his teacher in this song.
Yoruba Andabo is a Cuban rumba ensemble founded in 1981 by conga drummer Pancho Quinto. The company evolved from an amateur group known as Guaguancó Marítimo Portuario, established in 1961 on the docks of Havana. Yoruba Andabo is one of the leading exponents of the guarapachangueo style of Cuban rumba, which incorporated Quinto’s rhythmic ideas for batá and cajón (wooden box).
Our connections in Cuba run deep and when you travel with PlazaCUBA, you’ll meet our friends in Yoruba Andabo and other rumba groups.
