Most folks seem to be thinking about going large, so at some point I made the decision to instead dive into the small. It reveals a different kind of story, an alternate approach to expansiveness and a sense of connectivity. For sure.
As a dance artist, this ongoing examination of how I move, following my particular path and opening another window on the capacity of our bodies as expressive instruments, is enough. But of course, we all live in and with the world. We pay attention. And there’s always the question of how overtly we address what the nature of our momentary presence here means in relation to others and to the environs that support, feed, and respond to us. Yes, that too.
This solo (dancing and text revealed on placards) is another step in my ongoing investigation of how to mesh what intrigues me movement-wise and what impels me as a human being. We have a lot of different ideas both about what defines our dancing and as to what ought to be said about existing in the world. Do we grind in on specifics, or hope to cast a wider net? Just after this piece was premiered, our lives changed on multiple fronts. Coming from diverse experiences, we now have further choices to make regarding the best ways to express ourselves. And though we get older, still the nagging questions remain. I can’t speak for anyone else but keep trying to figure all of this out for myself. And if it resonates…
