My Akamai project is titled “Our Pacific’s loss” and revolves around Maori and Pasifika suicide in Aotearoa. The dance performed by Tori Sosene and the song, sung by Heide Ben, tries to capture suicide. The song and performance shows two sides to a story. One where she is perceived as happy and one that shows the true feelings of how she feels on the inside, fooling those around her. This song is about a beautiful woman in red, with the skin colour of the earth, She was rescued in the ocean by Makie and Silinga. They call to her and ask her who are her parents, and she says that she was a gift from the Gods Tangaroa (Tangaloa) and she has the soul of the God Rongonui (Longonui). She tried to commit suicide because of how unhappy she was here on earth. With the suicide rates increasing and our Maori and Pasifika brothers and sisters taking their lives, there is an urgent need of change!
