In this video we’re talking to some judges to get a little background on the judges program, one Wizards of the Coast’s secrets to game longevity. The judges program is how game judges are certified and maintained for competitive play.
Recently, Wizards has moved the responsibility for overseeing the Judge program to Judge Academy (www.judgeacademy.com), a for-profit company , beginning on October 1st, 2019. At that time, judges will be charged an annual fee of $50-$400 depending on level. While there is some controversy, with advocates saying that the promo package that judges will receive will more than offset these costs, MTG Oracle considers this to be a bad move.
A comprehensive overview of the new Judge Academy can be found in Rich Stein’s article from Hipsters of the Coast, Eric Levine’s article from Channel Fireball, and Lauren Orsini’s article in Forbes Magazine.
