Dance is an art form that has evolved over the centuries through social and historical context. It can be expressed in many ways— acrobatics, martial arts, rhythmic and lyrical movement — depending on the genre or style of dance being performed. Dance is also associated with music; it is a spontaneous form of movement interpreted through music and body language by the audience members. The standard form of dance is characterized by grace, rhythm and musicality. It can be performed solo or in groups, with body movements that are acrobatic or athletic.

The academic club was originally named the “vernacular club” since they initially performed English country dances such as the jig and hornpipe to entertain their British counterparts at Buckingham Palace during World War I (1914–1918). This was an international effort to unite countries during wartime under one flag— the Union Jack of Great Britain. Dances were performed at Buckingham Palace to welcome Queen Mary back from her visit with King George V so she could pass on messages to her family in her country home town of Glamis Castle (Devlin 1). To entertain the queen, the “academic club” needed to learn new dance steps fast so they could keep up with Queen Mary’s tour schedule. They learned new steps for each stop on her tour throughout Great Britain so she could show off her country’s best- Dance moves became an important way for people from different cultures to interact when traveling together (Devlin 1).

Dancing is a fundamental part of human civilization because it allows people to interact freely without being confined to rigid restrictions imposed by time schedules or tasks (Kotler 4). People have danced since prehistoric times, as evidenced by cave paintings depicting prehistoric animals dancing together— including dinosaurs— dating back 40 thousand years (Kotler 3). The earliest recorded dance performance was done by King Aga of Ugarit around 3000 BC; his performance consisted of twelve steps (Devlin 1). In addition, ancient Egypt had its own version of modern dancing called ballet that began around 1300 AD when French dancers brought it back from Europe (Kotler 2). Ballet continues to grow today as an art form practiced by various colleges across the world.
