When we established our academy back in 2008, belly dance was just two-three years old of having become the talk of the town (in India). There is no denying that Hindi cinema had initiated its audience into the culture of Belly Dance with “Mehbooba Mehbooba” in Sholay (1975). However, 90’s folks would strongly recall getting a hold of it with “Shakira Shakira” (are we right or are we right?). The subtle-supple dance style gained so much popularity in the country thereon that today, it no longer seems like a far-out style amongst the several iconic Indian dance forms. Not only as a dance style, Belly Dance has gained immense acceptance for its body-toning benefits. No wonder why it is also one of the Zumba rhythms. Keeping up with our commitment to flag up the dance and fitness culture, we have been successfully running Belly Dance classes in Delhi for years now. It might interest you to know that the germ of Belly Dancing lies in the Middle East of the 18th century. Said to have originated in Egypt as “Oriental Dancing” or Raqs Sharqi, Belly Dance has profound contributions behind its popularity and acceptance from other countries such as France, Turkey, Lebanon and the US. Some theories do suggest that belly dancing has its origins in the ancient Indian times as well but there is no specific record as to exactly when this sinuous dance style started ruling the hearts of the Indians. Belly dance is pleasing to the eye and astonishing more so because one can never understand which step is led by which body part unless they actually give it a try. For instance, one can never guess that the knees are the silent leaders behind those jaw-dropping hip hits. The intricacies of belly dancing lie within the engagement of the right, often neglected muscles wherein the torso area plays most of the part. It is hence why most belly dancers, irrespective of age or body shape, are endowed with a strong core and those sexy V cut abs and obliques. While belly dancing is not to be confused with a workout, it does render vital health benefits.
